Neuropsychiatry Lab

Areas of Investigation

The Laboratory investigates the clinical phenomenology and biological bases of neuropsychiatric diseases. The areas range from psychopathology to neuropsychology, from molecular and cellular biology to neuroimaging. The approach is multidimensional, using different survey methods and different assessment tools. Data collection and data analysis are conducted by a multidisciplinary team consisting of psychologists, biologists, physicians and physicists.

Clinical Activity, Biomarkers and Neuroimaging

The Laboratory of Neuropsychiatry studies the biological and genetic markers over the activity of early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases (dementia and movement disorders), cerebrovascular (stroke) and psychiatric (schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder). Such markers are also used for the prediction of the clinical course of the disease.

The further study of the individual's cognitive function is accomplished with the use of standardized neuropsychological tests, and neuropsychiatric symptoms can be analyzed through psycho-diagnostic and psychometric scales. The results allow to characterize the cognitive and psychopathological profiles of patients with neurological and psychiatric diseases. The profiles are then correlated to any structural, functional and metabolic brain alterations, detectable by qualitative and quantitative techniques of neuroimaging. These techniques, widely used by the Laboratory, allow us to draw inferences about brain changes that underlie neurological and psychiatric diseases and their symptomatic manifestations.

Research Linked to the Local Network

The Laboratory works with several hospitals in Rome: Sant'Andrea Hospital (Sapienza University of Rome), Sant’Alessandro Nursing Home (Tor Vergata University of Rome), Tor Vergata University Hospital, Villa von Siebenthal, Mental Health Departments of the Public Health Services (ASL) Roma E and Roma H. Many of the stakeholders are included in research protocols and followed throughout the course of the disease. The assessment carried out for scientific purposes allows a better definition of clinical parameters useful for therapeutic purposes.
