Developmental Dyslexia Lab

Areas of Investigation

The Laboratory of Develeopmental Dyslexia conducts research on normal and pathological conditions of reading, with the aim of studying the mechanisms underlying developmental dyslexia. It deals in particular with visual-perceptual aspects such as the scanning of texts and the comorbidity between disorders of reading and computing as well as writing disorders.

The Laboratory employs eye tracking techniques to detect visual behavior and psychophysical techniques for measuring the contrast sensitivity thresholds and the level of visual crowding between letters, which makes it difficult to decode words. It also uses recording techniques of reaction time, verifying the interval between a verbal or non-verbal stimulus and the person's response, and rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) to measure the amount of words read per minute.

Evaluation Tests

Tests to evaluate reading have been developed through research of Line D of the Santa Lucia Foundation. The use of these tests is reserved for professionals (psychologists, neuropsychologists, speech therapists). Tests (in Italian) are granted free and full use of license of Santa Lucia Foundation according to its Mission to support scientific community with the development of new diagnostic and rehabilitative procedures.
